Aggtelek National Park

The directorate was established on nearly 200 km² with the headquarters in Jósvafő.

The park is located in an unrivalled region of natural and cultural treasures, the has-been ‘Gömör-Torna’ Karst. This was the first Hungarian national park which was established with the primary goal of protecting geologic assets, superficial formations and caves alike. Underground natural assets – the caves of Aggtelek and the Slovak Karst – were included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1995.

Apart from the natural assets, the region abounds in places of cultural and historical interest. Besides the sites open to visitors, the ecotourism department of the directorate routinely organizes guided tours into restricted caves, sightseeing in the local villages and round trips focusing on ecological, botanical and zoological topics.

The world-famous stalactite cave of Aggtelek (Baradla Cave) is not the only subterranean gem of the park, there are a number of other caves offering amazing experiences for visitors.

The values and sights within the park are enough to fill several days with programmes. It is worth planning a lengthier stay in the region to get to know this special but largely unknown part of Hungary.
