Duna-Ipoly National Park

The National Park was established in 1997. The area of the park is almost 605 km². The headquarters is in Budapest.

In the Danube-Ipoly National Park Directorate the habitats are remarkably different. As there is a dominant proportion of low-elevation mountains, deciduous forests, karst scrubland and rocky grasslands abound. From the mountaintops covered with beech forests to the hornbeam-oak forests of the lower regimes several kinds of broad-leaved forests can be found here. The dominant vegetation type on the steep and sun-warmed southern slopes of the Transdanubian Region and the Buda Mountain Range is the karst scrubland. The flora and the fauna of the dolomite rocky grasslands are unique and the slope steppes are not only spectacular but also very diverse. The mountain streams and steep ravines are home to a special wildlife adapted to cool and humid environments.

The southern part of Pest County and the Mezőföld bear the characteristics of the Great Plain where loess grasslands, sandy grasslands, mires and fens interchange. The other countrywide rarities of the area are the relict patches of lowland oak forest. The untouched corners of the Ipoly Valley, the breath-taking panoramas of the Börzsöny Mountains, the Szentendre Island embraced by the two branches of the Danube and the Danube Bend awaits the visitor with an endless treasure trove of natural wealth. The caves of the national park conceal a wonderland, as do the bird paradise in the Dinnyés Fertő and the Turján region with the fens of Ócsa.
